Red Bull Salzburg scored 22 minutes into the first half to take control of the two-legged tie but dinamo pressed and pressed, knowing they would need a goal to for extra time, and finally found it through a deflected shot by Fernandes in the 88th minute. The 1-1 result through 90 minutes would mean Dinamo and Red Bull would play an additional 30 minutes of extra time to see who would be playing among Europe’s elite in the Champions League group stage next month.
Five minutes into the extra period, Fernandes would find Hilal Soudani with a through-ball and the Algerian would head home a spinning ball after his original shot was partially blocked by the Austrian keeper. With the 2-1 away victory, Dinamo will now be seeded in the 4th and weakest Champions League pot. The draw will take place Thursday night in Monaco.
—————————————————-
After a 1-1 draw in Zagreb last week, the Croatian champs will need a minimum of one goal to make the Champions League group stage in Septmeber. A win obviously gets them through but Red Bull Salzburg will be a tricky test at home Wednesday night. The perennial debate continues: is it better for Dinamo to get crushed in Champions League or compete in Europa Leage?
I realized that there are 2 Croatian players playing for Red Bull Salzburg, namely defender Duje Ćaleta-Car, formerly of HNK Šibenik and midfielder Josip Radošević, formerly of Hajduk Split.
Croatia always excels in sports for a country of 4.5 million people-clearly punching above their weight.
Recent achievements.

If calculated by Gold Medals per capita-Croatia finished 3rd in the world.

Take a look at Dinamo Zagreb qualifying for the CL with a shoe-string budget.
“Mental Midget Syndrome” that Ziva likes to talk about doesn’t exist.
In soccer Croatia is consistently held back by questionable officiating-which I outlined in my article on this site.
For those of you who missed it-
here is the link and read up.
The video evidence is undeniable.

Well it appears Denis has converted to my line of thinking.
Rakitic knows why Croatia lost to Portugal. He’s the one that got stamped by Fonte and nothing happened. Two stamps no reds, 28 fouls 1 yellow card, handball no PK. Take a look at some soccer box scores-when is the last time you saw 28 fouls in a game? Now ask yourself when is the last time you saw 28 fouls and 1 yellow card? Its unheard of.
Not sure why the champs league draw would be ‘fixed’ for Real, they shouldn’t need any help getting out of a group phase regardless of opposition.
@dannyj
Crnkovic also said that Radošević and Rebić would lead our team to glory too.

I feel the frustration BUT I look forward to each and every event that represents ljepa nasa.
You and Ronaldo take this round off and then will see you for the next one!
iggy while i dont have an inguinal… about the only one i don’t have.. like they said its not a biggy.. sure get it fixed but its not a stresser
i still squat multiple times a week with all my ailments… as my mom says budalo;)
ya what are the potential starting lineups.. this game feels like it just creeped up
hope we are ready for them. tough match to start it up but it should set the tone for qualifying
crnkovic i sure hope you are right about the others cause for sure you seem right about rog and pjaca
any reports on pjaca in italy so far?
Denis Svirčić says:
@jm,
Boycotting is such a powerful word. Lets just say that I’m not interested in football at this time.
Did you see that Spaniard get hit with a technical foul for flopping in the olympics(basketball)? I almost fell off my chair. It was beautiful. Only if the NBA and football would catch on.
Shit, I would rather watch women’s football right now. They get hit and pop right up. Some of them have tears in their eyes but they carry on.
@Mate,
Totally agree. I so enjoyed watching the Olympics; didn’t see a single stretcher pulled out so a crying tatooed turd can be carried off the playing field. And to think, young people all over the world idolize these clowns. Yes, there is certainly talent in the sport of football but so much is ruined by a culture that I find horrific.
As to basketball, I didnt see that flop but I saw players getting hit pretty hard. It was a matter of pride for them to brush it off, the way men should do. Virtually all of the hard contact in basketball, if transferred to a football pitch, would elicit stretcher bearers.
Not consistently but just for a run.
For 1 month come major tournament time.
It almost happened in ’98. Some might say strange forces were at play in our loss to France but at least we got close. Maybe next time we overcome those obstacles if our players somehow play through it.
“Ne znam zašto nam se ovo dogodilo”
this can be interpreted in more ways than one.
True.
I tried to find the Modric quote but I couldn’t find it. Luka said something like this….
“why do these things keep happening to us.” What? Bad luck, Bad ref, bad mamic, bad suker, bad uefa, bad fifa?
@Slavonac,
“Cacic was not gonna get praise”
Surprisingly, people in Croatia think he’s a good coach but had his hands tied when it came to player selection. I don’t know whose idea it was to start Rog, Pjaca and Jedvaj against Spain, but it worked and it was genius. Jedvaj was lost on the first goal but he played well the rest of the way.
@Iggy,
Hope you get better brother
@danny,
“but i still feel we are sitting on a strong generation”
Yes, this is the sad part. I can’t go through another tournament watching another great generation go down in flames.
Dechampes said that he would win the Euro with Croatia. That means one of two things, a) Croatia has a better roster than France, b) dechampes has never won anything as a coach and is just talking out of his ass.
@maminjo,
“So what’s the solution?”
There is no solution…
Take a look at the champs league draw yesterday…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc8Z2wJEAho
fixed for Real Madrid.
Black people in the states started this “black lives matter” campaign. Yes, they are being discriminated against and treated badly by the “white police”. However, its the black on black crime that is killing that race in the states.
Yes, the referees screwed us, yes, UEFA and FIFA are corrupt by fixing matches and fixing draws. However, its our own people that are screwing us. Mamic, Suker, etc etc. and no one is doing anything about it. I take that back. The Bad Blue Boys are doing something about it. Maksimir is silent for Dinamo games. Nothing will change until we stop feeding the big bad snake.
@poglavnik,
You are hoping that we rise above Suker, Mamic, UEFA, FIFA, etc etc. Good luck. Its not easy playing football with a leash around your neck.
@Ivo,
thanks for the comment. I was quiet until JM asked me “are you still boycotting the upcoming game.”
IT won’t be easy. I don’t remember the last time I missed an important qualifier. I don’t count games against San Marino.
.
thanks ! so it’s glandular fever, same thing ended Mario Ancic’s career? gotchya, cheers
@Iggy

@Iggy
Monaural or monophonic sound reproduction (often shortened to mono) is intended to be heard as if it were a single channel of sound perceived as coming from one position (unlike stereo, which uses two channels to convey the impression of sound coming from different places from left, middle, and right).
thanks ante, appreciate that !
yes it is an inguinal hernia so going to get an ultrasound in a few days but sounds like its no huge deal
also i had a bad cold recently (coughing a lot) which apparently accounts for why its come up and looks worse lately, so its not a big deal at this point and i’ll go on waiting list to have it fixed up but apparently its just day surgery and not bad these days which is nice
i know my dad had a hernia operation 40-50 years ago and it was butchery but it’s much improved now, thankfully
Allen, what is mono?
Iggy,
Even though I think you’re one of the douchers here, I hope that everything works out with your possible hernia and lump. Got you in my prayers that everything works out man. Take it easy and let us know how everything turns out. Take care
Anyone hear about Rebic? Heard his career is possibly in jeopardy from getting mono.
You see how it is. Rakitic makes a statement and some people like Denis take it out of context. Fit the narrative I guess. Ziva is good at that as well.
Enough with this crap. If you don;t want to watch the team or support them… ..fine, Leave it alone and watch another sport or support your local Prva Liga team.
Plenty of Hrvati will support them come September when qualifying begins.
Bog i Hrvati.
Robert Muric is going to be playing for my beloved Pescara where he will be teaming up with Zuparic.
I predict the Dolphins will pushing hard for those Europa league spots!
Thanks for that info dannyj.. i dunno the type of hernia but i see doc today again so i can find out.. it’s in the pelvic region though and its a bit of a lump so.. idk if need surgery or not but i might go on waiting list anyway just as prefer to have fixxied up
Also Croatia doesnt play on monday, just to clarify, it’s sept 5 so still a week and a half away
im totally pumped and excited for the qualifiers! Can’t wait to put the bad taste of how euro ended behind and enter a new campaign, i hope the players are as eager
im not concerned about mamic and co or boycotters, my main concern is our fans.. we are already playing how many games in a row in empty stadiums to start? is it 2 or more? so there wont be any fans at our first few home games.. and the worst thing is that’s almost a relief cos it’s safer (although there was that swastika thing last time).. but yeah, i say bring it on! Time for turk-smashing ! 😀
Rakitic said, “I don’t know why this happened to us.”
I know why it happened! Portugal scored a goal and Croatia didn’t!
Mandzukic is a shit player.
I also hope the players rise above the bullshit and Mandzukic when they walk on to the pitch.
Well said slavonac. Agree Danny j. Agree poglavnik. And maminjo as well I agree…just one correction, pjaca and rog didn’t prove everyone here wrong, they proved me right. I told you all these kids are tough. Pjaca = new thierry Henry! rog = new steven gerrard. Ivan fiolic = new juan mata! tin jedvaj = new maldini. Caleta-car = new pique. Benkovic = new desailly. Brekalo = new ribery/hazard, halilovic = new savicevic, pavicic = new lampard??? Coric = ante coric! Etc etc ?one thing though…how can a coach that doesn’t make substitutions until the 90th minute going to manage the transfer from one generation to the next? What’s he goo a do, play the same team until they retire then give the next guy a chance? Cacic needs to start with pjaca and kalinic in place of brozovic and mandzukic against the Turks…….
lol poglavnik
i agree though… coaching and bullshit aside… time for them to grab the bull by the horns
we need someone to really step up as captain type player coach
thats what we need the most imo
There is no solution as far as I’m concerned.
All I hope for is that the players rise above the bullshit and win when they walk onto the field. Time to take some accountability. Damn millennials and their whinging,,,
So what’s the solution?
Assume that everyone in the HNS are “corrupt” and have them all step down despite guys like Romeo Jozak being quality enough that other countries offered to hire them in high positions within their own football federations?
Hire a “foreign” coach? Doesn’t matter who really, so long as they’re foreign, so they can’t be bought, right?
Foreign coaches actually have a pretty bad track record with other teams. Look at Serbia and their foreign coach experiences.
Then what if they do these things and don’t get better? Kick and scream and boycott again?
I would love to see them hire an experienced coach, yes, but aside from that, there is no way to assess if the HNS are as wretchedly corrupt as everybody says they are.
The player selection is not out of whack. Guys like Pjaca and Rog proved everyone here wrong and truly are quality players. Their selection was justified. Most people here never watched either of them play, and were screaming murder when these two were called up ahead of Halilović.
I was pro-Halilović, but it’s obvious that he needs growing up, and even Barca seems to think so too. It was not a conspiracy that Rog & Pjaca were selected for the final squad. It was also not a conspiracy that Lovren was left off the team either.
Cro played well in this tournament, but didn’t gamble enough against Portugal and barely lost as a result. Lots of other teams did the same, and Portugal took this tournament as a result. If Čačić decided to play more open, Ronaldo probably would have tore up our slow defence, scored a brace, and everyone here would still be calling for his head for not smothering Ronaldo. It’s lose lose.
I wish that Kek took the job when it was offered to him, because I think he has the right combination of experience and success, plus he speaks our language. But he turned it down. Otherwise, I would love to try to coax a coach like Capello… But even if you’re throwing stupid money at him, there’s no guarantee that he will accept, or even succeed if he does accept. Ask Russia if they are satisfied with what he did for them.
It’s not easy getting the “right” coach who has experience and the right chemistry with your team. I hated our former-player turned coach process, but at least we have a coach with some experience (who actually gets the starting lineups right).
I’m giving Čačić another chance, solely because I think he’s proven to be a decent coach and I don’t think any high quality coach would accept this gig so closely to the campaign.
now i just accept the loss as a loss… sure we could have had a couple of calls, sure we could have had some more luck but still we were in the game till the end we could have probably taken it a bit more to them and maybe the outcome could have changed
it is what it is… now we have to move on… mamic going to mamic and until someone whacks him it ain’t gonna change
and by the way american politics going one of trump or hilary going to probably run the world into the ground so we may not make world cup;)
#iamcanadian
wow qualifying already… lets do this
denis i hear ya man and i congratulate you on taking a stand but i still feel we are sitting on a strong generation and i want us to do something at world cup
“Ne znam zašto nam se ovo dogodilo”
this can be interpreted in more ways than one, Rakitic could have felt they were lucky and we weren’t….or he could have felt the ref didn’t call things our way…
you said you know, as in, you know why we lost…I guess many think they know…I bet France is still asking themselves how they lost in the finals to Portugal.
sometimes we have to accept that losing that game, the way we lost it…could have been far worse if we tried to play open soccer. nobody seemed to figure out how to beat Portugal and yet, we…us Croatians…a team that qualified second to get to the Euro’s and a team that was inconsistent and hasn’t done tremendously well over the course of several years…for some reason many here believe they knew the recipe to win and the TV repairman is just a dumb Mamic/Suker puppet.
believe what you want bro. I don’t think Cacic was gonna get praise regardless of how the team did, even if they won it…many of you would have said the team was great and he fluked out and just happened to be the coach at the time.
“Bolja momčad je ispala. Ni Portugalci ne znaju kako su nas pobijedili. Ne znam zašto nam se ovo dogodilo. Sjajno smo odigrali Euro i pokazali da smo jedna od najboljih momčadi na prvenstvu.”
Rakitic after Portugal match….
“Ne znam zašto nam se ovo dogodilo”
He knows… and I know…
.
@Jm,
Yes, I wrote that and I stick by that. I will not be watching Croatia-Turkey on Monday.
I’m just done with football. Too much corruption, too much money, too much flopping.
here we go again blaming the savez, suker and mamic, same crap
@ denis
were you the writer of this article?
http://croatiansports.com/?p=27144
“As of today, I am officially in protest of the national team until we get our team back. 95% of the world would die to have players that we have. Its a shame that another great generation of Croatian players were held back. Not much left to say my friends. I will still give what I have to the website and still follow and report on our players in various leagues around Europe.
But, I will not be watching a Suker-Mamic run Croatia.”
Remember to hold strong…you can’t go back on this the first game into the new qualifying campaign!…that’ means no watching of the game i believe
although, i’d welcome you back into the repka fan club as long as you promise not to do it again…. #uvijekvjerni
Vlasic and Kalanic to Dinamo for $10M?

I wouldn’t be shocked if this was true.
I hope I’m reading reports wrong, but Croatia scheduled a friendly against Hnk segesta??? August 30th, if its true that is a shame and an absolute waste of everyone’s time except for a few fans of Sisaks shitty third division team
Dannyj – you sound like you’re living on borrowed time!
@ denis
are you boycotting cro-turkey on sept 5?
sorry iggy i think it was me… is it an inguinal hernia? i have 3 of my own… two in the belly button area and a hiatal which is when stomach pushes up through esophagus
its not guaranteed you require a surgery
some smart cunt said in a recent thread, calm down iggy, you’ll get a hernia.. i cant remember what i was carrying on about
but i just wanted to say i literally do have a hernia now and a lump on my pelvic area : (
so whoever that fucko was, thanks a bunch !
Mamic is a Hercegovac – he doesn’t know how to swim.
I blame Mamic for water polo too
Yea, I’m surprised you didn’t write an article about Mamic after we lost to the Serbs in waterpolo 😉
I blame Mamic 🙂
Where is Croatia on the coefficient rating?
Did they manage to jump into 15th?
Or did Hajduk’s loss mess that up?
Three missed penalties for Hajduk, two of them went over the goal.
Not a bad effort against Maccabi Tel Aviv, who played in the Champions League last season.
sigh, hajduk lose on penalties
this stream works for me:

Hajduk in extra-time leading 2-1 (3-3agg) 15 minutes until penalties.
@Ivo-even more impressive as they sell 1 or 2 of their players every year, then churn out replacements like clockwork. Disclaimer-I am no Dinamo fan.
@Slavonac
Terrific post by you….as always.
Quite impressive feat when you think of how small the payroll is and the size of the country and yet we continue to make CL play.

Looks like Palasic to Milan on loan.
BZ personally I’m happy to see Lovren back in the fold. I believe he will be a starter for us in the not so distant future.
As far as Halilovic, I feel he has a bright future. He is on the U21 squad and I’m assuming he’d start both U21 upcoming matches for us. Better than sitting na klupi for the senior side.
Ivo,
in my first post on this thread I mentioned this: “we still think that qualifying for Champions League is no big achievement? I remember last year people were rambling off all the shitty teams Dinamo had to play in order to qualify”
the funny thing about some people is they think smaller teams from smaller countries are beginners and that they don’t know how to play the game, so they be-little Dinamo’s achievements. I saw it last year and there was some mention of Dinamo’s other qualifications meant little because they’d get knocked out early…and that they play garbage teams. this is why I often get turned off with reading shit from people that have absolutely no clue how difficult it is to achieve certain things. there are so many variables involved…but the most important one is consistency and then being united and competing for every detail on the field.
I’m happy Dinamo won. I wish I could be happy for Hajduk to achieve something but their fans ruin it for me. I like their organization and what they stand for, I love Hajduk’s traditions and their atmosphere…I really think Dalmatinci are cool and fun people, so many of my friends are from Dalmacija….but it makes me sick to my stomach when I see Hajduk fans, especially on this site and others, blame Mamic for things about their own failures and not recognize that their own club has been mismanaged, raped and pillaged for years. they have such an amazing history and they look like minnows. Tudor cried when he got a contract…he then quit 3 days prior to the re-start after the Christmas break…because he didn’t get his way. thats the mentality of their members, they behave as children…they jump up and down, flap their arms and legs and put the onus on Mamic, for their own bullshit…this topic and the boycott has exhausted me over these past few years. I just cannot understand how people do not see their own faults but tend to see everyone else’s.
You guys jinxed it, we had a good vibe going throughout Olympics & now Z-bag will erroneously believe he is missed. My best guess is he got evicted, and living on Turkey’s pull-out couch. I hear the couch is used as a bed, but also as a therapy device; as his psychologist is teaching him how not to be a mental midget.
Coric is impressive. We are looking like we will have another 10 years of opportunities to win something big.
Is it time to discuss Lovren ( back on roster) & Halilovic (still off)?
Ziva usually hides when Croatians do anything well ie. Cilic winning the US Open, Croatian Olympic performance, Dinamo CL results. He’ll resurface when “mental midget syndrome” kicks back in.
who gives a f@@k about ziva that loser, better he is gone with his mental midget attitude
Where is ziva,
Is he on a pep guardiola esque sabbatical
@Slavonac
I was impressed with Dinamo, This was a very exciting game to watch and Coric is really showing the quality he is made of. Some of those passes were first class. Glad to see Gordan contribute.
Dinamo deserves to be going to CL play. Hopefully a good group, who knows maybe they beat Arsenal again this year. 🙂
So, are BBB still boycotting Dinamo or are they going to support them in CL?
good article on the win along with pics

Bravo Dinamo. Exciting game to watch and they deserve to be in. Love watchin Rog and Coric.
Second half was EPIC!
Seeing a Croatia coach make any tactical adjustment was a revelation.
As basic as it was, Schifo playing as an auxiliary striker got some good hold up play to bring in the attacking talent.
Marko Rog is a BEAST!
Coric is silky smooth.
Mafija aside it is nice to see the Hrvati advance.
The rich get richer has Dinamo sell Rog to Napoli AND they are in champions league group stage.
Little by little the Turkey match is creeping into the psyche.
ZDS
@ Anonymous – World Cup is the same way.
Congrats to Dinamo.
Hajduk plays the second leg tomorrow against Maccabi Tel Aviv at 2:45PM (EST) in Split.
Hajduk lost the first leg 1-2 – trying to qualify for the Europa League group stage.
Good thing those Austrians were a bunch of mental midgets. (irony intended)
Congrats to Dinamo and fans. But, I hate that UEFA has dummied down the Champions League by bringing in teams that have no chance to advance. Socialism at its finest. Why can’t we get the best 32 teams?
I only saw the last 15 minutes of the game. This result really surprises me. Bravo Dinamo.
Leicester, Sevilla, Club Brugge or Basel. This would be a good group!
This would be a Big Big Win for Dinamo.
This should do very well for the coefficient rating too, since Austria is the team that is just ahead of us.
We may leapfrog them because of this win.
we still think that qualifying for Champions League is no big achievement? I remember last year people were rambling off all the shitty teams Dinamo had to play in order to qualify…they must be a real flukey team and these pre-qualifiers must mean the teams are the absolute shits!
😉
Salzburg gotta score twice… This should be over
Dinaaaaamoooo!!!

They have been dominating possession in the second half! Almost felt like it was coming
How about that?
