Dario Šarić: Can A Guy From Šibenik Win ‘Rookie of the Year’?

Croatian national basketball player and Philadelphia 76er, Dario Šarić, who is in his NBA rookie season, played in Los Angeles for the first time Saturday night as his side fell to the Clippers 112-100. The 22 year-old Šarić was born in Šibenik and has played for the national side since his U-16 days, where he was voted unanimous MVP of the 2010 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. His breakout moment came at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he blocked Pau Gasol’s last second shot to secure the win for Croatia over Spain.

Šarić has been on a tear the last six weeks with fellow rookie teammate Joel Embiid out to injury and the trade of Ersan Ilyasova giving the Croatian a starting spot. Šarić is nearly averaging 20 points per game in that span with his name quickly rising to the top of ‘Rookie of the Year’ talks.

Here’s what Šarić had to say when asked about possibly being named Rookie of the Year, the Croatian basketball federation and if he feels he has to carry on the legacy from the late, great Dražen Petrović, who was also from Šibenik.

Šarić has career night with 29 points vs. Lakers

    This kids got the GOODS!

Vertical leap training and fine tune the feet to finger follow through and we have an NBA All-Star!

    It is on at EuroBasket!

It’s not just the fact that he’s talented…he also a good guy. You can tell a lot about a player when you sit down and talk to him, and at 22, he’s more mature than half the league.

Dario has a YO-YO handle. His dribble is fluid. Now the three ball is building into his game?

    Great passer as well!

Full range of motion FRONTAL squats will give him more lower leg power and core activation. This will support his jumper and give him a bit more lift above the rim.

His toughness allows him to play the 4 in the NBA and his skills allow him dominate.

They need to give him the rookie of the year if he continues this run to finish the season. I get Embiid but you got to respect what Šarić is doing on the court.

Šarić should bring the ball up and be the primary playmaker for us this summer.

Hezonja should guard the opposing playmaker.

Now like the nogomet team, I feel the košarka team can match anyone in Europe.

Still searching for the next playmaking guard?

A kid with good speed and ball handing that run a simple pick and roll?

you really got to give saric the hat off for his performance this year

was up and down at the start, but he’s been terrific since embiid has been out and ilaysova traded

impressively, and actually positively, he’s been so impactful while still going on a slump from 3….once he gets that down (which most signs point to him doing), there is a lot of potential

the other real exciting thing and probably speaks to his improvement lately, is that his playmaking (ie assists) have gone up massively recently. surprisingly, he was getting very few assists early in the season despite being billed as a great passer….now that he is the focal point, he has a lot more freedom and confidence

at the end of the day, he’s one of those guys that no one can understand how he’s playing so effectively as on nba standards he lacks length and athleticism…but there are clearly other types of athleticism at work giving him an edge. not to mention the guy continues to prove himself to be an incredibly smart player and tough as nails

as smart as he is on the court, he continues to lack it financially! he gave up an INCREDIBLE amount of money by honoring his word and coming to the nba this year

  5. Soul Champ says:

    25 pts
    7 rebs
    6 assists
    3 steals
    2 blocks

At the warriors and lose by 3 with depleted squad ?

Power and feet-finger 3 ball training and he will not be stoppable.

    Plus the willing passer ?

He needs to hire the best NBA trainers this summer.

    @ JM

Šarić will become a MAX player and recoup any few million he lost.

He has been rewarded with all the injuries and trades giving him an opportunity to express all his talents.

    Eurobasket !!!!

Awesome work boys! Love the Ante & Deante bit too :)
Seems like Dario gets it in terms of work, and has some unique skills to match, look forward to watching him play for years to come. A big man with any sort of handles and touch is pure gold in the NBA. I could see a Dirk-type trajectory for his skills. His game could likewise, age very well too.
