Marin Čilić has held serve thus far in the year’s first Grand Slam: the Australian Open.
Čilić only dropped one set in his first three matches, to qualifier Vasek Pospisil in the first round, before meeting #10 ranked Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta Sunday afternoon in Melbourne. #6 Čilić would drop the first set in a tiebreaker before taking the next three sets for the win; needing two tiebreakers to get the job done, winning his 100th Grand Slam match in the process.
Now Marin Čilić, whose only Grand Slam championship came in 2014 at the US Open, will face the #1 player in the world in the quarterfinals: Rafael Nadal. Nadal needed four sets in as many hours to dispose of Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the 4th Round, so he could be a bit fatigued going into the Čilić match. It would be Čilić’s toughest hurdle on the way to the Final, but a great hurdle at that.
The match should be played Tuesday night in Melbourne in Rod Laver Stadium.
On the women’s side, Petra Martić was unable to get out of the 4th Round, going down to Elise Martens 7-6, 7-5 Sunday night. She was the last Croatian woman left in singles play.
I’m so proud of Cilic
just love the guy
he kinda represents the best (and worst) of Hrvati talent
Cilic looking good now!!! Is this another Croatia v Spain epic like euros!!!
Okay, it’s shifted to night-time now
Nadal has “only” won the Australian Open once.
This is his weakest tournament.
However, Nadal is probably trying to up his Aussie Open titles as he’s moving toward the tail end of his career.
It’s actually not being played at night, it’s 10 am in the morning unfortunately. I can’t see Cilic winning this – i said previously he can make the quarters but then Nadal – so this is prolly the end of the road for him, though i’d be happy to be surprised.
Fucks sake. That is a huge blow – Krovinovic would have broken through into the team with the form he was in.
