Overall, the 2018 Australian Open will go down as the most successful Grand Slam in Croatian history. Obviously, Goran Ivanišević’s 2001 Wimbledon title as a wild card goes down in Croatian lore, but this year’s first Grand Slam has some special Croatian cooking in it.
Marin Čilić will face 19x Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, arguably the greatest tennis player to take the court, in the Australian Open Final Sunday; 7:30PM Australia time and 3:30AM (ET). It will be a rematch of the 2017 Wimbledon final where Čilić went down in straight sets after an emotional breakdown following a serious blister issue which shut down his maneuverability.
On the doubles side, 24 year-old Split native Mate Pavić will not only play in the men’s doubles final, but the mixed final as well. Pavić is a doubles specialist and has reached the men’s final alongside Austrian teammate Oliver Marach. The two played in the 2017 Wimbledon Final but lost to Melo/Kubot in a 5-set thriller. In the Aussie finale, Pavic/Marach will take on Colombian duo and #11 overall seed Cabal/Farah immediately after the women’s singles championship between Halep and Wozniacki Saturday night.
The following night, Pavić will join Canadian teammate Gabriela Dabrowski in the mixed doubles championship versus Babos/Bopanna. Pavić already has a mixed doubles Grand Slam title when he won it all in 2016 at the US Open with Laura Siegemund.
On the women’s singles side, unranked Petra Martić surprised as she made it to the 4th Round of the Aussie Open.
With Croatia hosting Canada in the first round of Davis Cup in Osijek February 2-4, this can only mean good things for Croatian tennis moving forward in 2018.

Gouku,
I’ve read it too. Matej Mitrovic to Club Brugge.
Club Bruges plays with a 3 men-defence and one of the defender got seriously injured so there will be room for Mitrovic.
Club is doing very well, more than 10 points ahead of number 2 but they’re not champion yet since there’s a playoff system in Belgium.
Playoffs in Belgium: The first six get to play a competition, points won in the normal competition are divided by 2 so Bruges will start the last 10 games with a 5 or 6 points lead. The playoffs will mean extra tough games for Mitrovic and will give him the chance to reach his best form.
Coach of Club Bruges is Ivan Leko who’s very popular over there. This winter he also bought Tomecak (ex-Dinamo Zagreb) as right back.
Matej Mitrovic going to Club Brugge
This is fucking HUGE
