Domagoj Vida was sent off in the 16th minute Tuesday night in Munich during his Besiktas Champions League debut after an errant back pass from a teammate left him in ‘no man’s land’ against Robert Lewandowski. Vida tried to slide tackle the ball away but was half a step too late and got all leg instead.
Besiktas weathered the storm for the rest off the first half but finally conceded to Thomas Mueller in the 43rd minute. The flood gates would open in the second half with Bayern Munich scoring four more for a 5-0 first leg victory.
Vida Red Card
In other CL action, Ivan Rakitić played the full match against Chelsea as Barcelona managed a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s Willian hit the post twice in the first half before finally scoring in the 62nd minute. Messi would equalize in the 75th to force the draw. Rakitić got in foul trouble early with a yellow card and had to play more conservatively on defense later in the match.
