After making the Wimbledon final in 2017 and the Australian Open final in 2018, losing both times to current world #1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, Marin Čilić has skyrocketed to #3 in the world; the highest he has ever been ranked. Arguably Croatia’s best tennis player, he underperformed at last week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, which is the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, losing in the 3rd round. Fortunately for Croatians attending the event, unranked 21 year-old Borna Ćorić surprised all by making the semifinals and forcing Roger Federer to a third and final set, ultimately losing.
Marin Čilić has been on the tour since 2005, been ranked in the Top-10 for nearly a decade, made three Grand Slam championships and won his only Grand Slam in 2014 at the US Open. However, most eyes have been on the “Big 4” (Federer, Nadal, Murray, Djokovic) for the past decade, pushing everyone else aside.
So at World #3 and making the Wimbledon and Aussie Open finals in the past year, we asked the average fan at the BNP Paribas Open what they knew about Marin Čilić. Here’s what they had to say:
[…] how much the tennis community at Indian Wells knew about Marin, Ante Kvartuc from US-based portal Croatian Sports hit the average spectator of the tournament to find […]
Cilic big loser again.
I have followed Marin Cilic for years and admire him. Anyone who doesn’t know who he is isn’t really a tennis fan.
yo having the name nebojsa must suck
Croatia kits were confirmed today.
The black kits are actually black.
The checkers on both kits seem to have a blurred effect. It’s strange, but we’ll have to see it in on the field.
@ Nebojsa,
Now I know you’re dumb as fuck for leaving a “dumb as fuck comment” on my website. Good luck today.
I am just curious, did you know it was Novak and you where playing around, or you are just dumb as fuck? Because it seems to me that you where dumb as fuck.
Coric had a really good run at Indian Wells and maybe should’ve beat Fed so there’s still some hope he’ll turn into an elite player (he’s only 21)
Can’t wait til this Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray era is done.
A bunch of old dudes with no good young talent winning Slams anymore.
Unprecedented.
Why is that?
@ Iggy,
You’re not wrong. But Cilic has been in Top 10 for a decade and was just n 2 Grand Slam finals. Is it another Easter European thing?
@Cigan,
Saw that. They really went after it on Index. I’m trying to make tennis cool again guys. That’s my MO here 🙂
