Was Dinamo Robbed?

March 13, 2019

Another tournament. Another questionable call goes against the Croatians.

Dinamo Zagreb had all to play for in Portugal Thursday night, already defeating Benfica 1-0 last week at Maksimir. A Dinamo away goal would have put the first place Portuguese club on the ropes, as they would have needed a minimum of three goals to progress under that scenario.

In the 22nd minute, Dinamo striker Bruno Petković was clipped in the box but no foul was given. There’s no VAR in Europa League which means the referee on the field is the ultimate decider on what is given.

After the match, Dinamo head coach Nenad Bjelica said, “there’s six referees on the field and no one can see that it was a penalty for Dinamo!”

A Dinamo penalty conversion would have surely put the Modri into the Europa League quarterfinals. Instead, they weathered the storm for 70 minutes until Benfica’s Jonas hit a half-volley past Dominik Livaković in the 71st to settle the tie even on aggregate.

The match would enter extra time – where a Dinamo away goal still would have given them complete control – but Benfica would strike first in the 94th minute off a Dinamo defensive lapse and seal the 3-0 win 10 minutes later with a looping, long-range shot from Grimaldo.

Dinamo may have had the rug pulled out from under them, but they should keep their heads high as they pushed the best team in Portugal to the brink – and most importantly earned Croatia a second Champions League berth in 2020 through this amazing Europa League run.

  1. Dannyj says:

I know someone said big deal for the youth team beating Liverpool youth
But success at both levels… this is so great to see
Look what we were doing when we were In our low point In early 2000s still qualifying and doing ok
Then we had the Golden generation mature together

The pipeline will keep going and going for a bit it seems
Let’s face it boys girls and butt hurt jyugo lovers we ain’t no surprise anymore

Is this youth squad the same one that one another youth thing a couple years back maybe in England I want to say??
Someone will know what I’m talking about

And seriously fuck This Tavares dude
Either you are one of us or not
We know most of us on here would only choose tge checkers
    Forget about it!

  2. Dannyj says:

Here is a question for debate?
Would rakitic be as successful if he chose Swiss?
    It’s just a hypothetical question
This is got to be our biggest “steal”

  3. Soul Champ says:

    @ Dannyj

    That is a great question??

For years he was misused with Croatia and their plumber/tv repair men coaches.

Plus he has had to play second fiddle to the magician Modrić.

This past run was only happening with Croatia.

But both Rakitic and Switzerland would have gone deep in major tournaments for years.

You can’t be a fixture in the Barca line up like he is and not be World Class.

  4. Maminjo says:

    @Dannyj

Tavares plays for Crystal Palace’s youth team (not their senior squad).

We current have a few defenders around his age who are STARTING on the senior squads of some solid European clubs in players like Ćaleta-Car, Benković, Pongračić, etc.

We also have a Dinamo U19 team filled with Croatian defenders who will be playing Chelsea in the UEFA Youth World Cup quarterfinals. I don’t see Crystal Palace in this tournament at all. Using that logic, Tavares should probably be behind some of the Dinamo U19 defenders in the pecking order as well.

Simply put, Croatia is no longer one of those National Teams who are desperate to naturalize any player that shows a bit of talent or plays in some foreign league.

The HNL is now a top 15 league, and probably a top league in terms of player development. There are literally TONS of young Croats playing on the U19 teams of major clubs across Europe…but none of that matters anymore to us.

Tavares is lucky he got a chance to even play a few friendlies for us, but he likely sees that he has a very narrow chance of ever making our squad. If he doesn’t want to stick around and fight for a spot, that is even better for us as we don’t want guys like that anyway. If he stays, then good, but it will be tough for a Crystal Palace youth squad player to make it into any of our teams.

  5. Razbijač says:

Anyone that doesn’t choose CRO, they can GO! We don’t need’em!

And we certainly don’t need’em, if CRO is they’re “fall back” option.

Croatia is bubbling with talent, that what you saw last summer was merely the tip of the Iceberg. Stay tuned, more CRO success to come….

  6. Razbijač says:

Rakitic would not have been as good if he played for Switzerland.

By choosing to play for Croatia, he became infused with the spirit and power of the Hrvat–allowing him to take his game to the next level.

  7. CroatiaU14 says:

    @Maminjo

Yes! We already have lots of depth in our defense when it come to our youth. Don’t forget about Mitrovic too…we never know what he can turn out to be…pretty sure he is injured right now

  8. CroatiaU14 says:

And yes, our youth production line, as of right now, is looking very good…our u19’s look excellent right now…Chelsea U19’s are very good…they have this one guy named Charlie Brown (someone mentioned him before) who will be a threat to our defense…this will be a good test for them

  9. Maminjo says:

I don’t watch alot of Ćaleta-Car, but Benković looks like the real deal.

If Ćaleta-Car can be anything like Benković, than we have our CB pairing for the next 10+ years. The fact that we have several others is just bonus.

Same goes for players that can play in the CDM role. We used to be starved there, but (aside from Brozović and Badelj) we have guys like Pašalić, Rog, Bistrović, Vuković, Moro, Palaversa… It’s insane. Brozo is only 26, but we literally have like 10 guys lining up for his job.

  10. BL says:

Caleta-Car seems to have won himself a starting spot for marseille the last couple months. So a decent league for a big young guy to develop in. Let’s hope he keeps that spot and gets lots of playing time. Anyway go Dinamo

  11. The truth says:

The funny thing about how “stacked ” we are at cdm is you wouldn’t actually want any of those guys playing brozovic who has had his own issues. Right now that list is just a bunch of wishful thinking

  12. Goku says:

Tried posting a link but its not showing up probably being filtered

Anyway, Search Arena Sport Live on google and its the first link livetkkodserbia

  13. Medo says:

Dynamo fortress holding up..my 3-0 Benfica prognostication looks way off.I am sure truth knew what the score would end up and will inform all of us AFTER the game ends.

  14. Dannyj says:

How many Croats playing for us?
I was reading a pissing match comment argument bout English vs German players on their respected teams cause of the beat down English teams did to German yesterday

  15. Bernardo says:

Typical Croatian. Everybody screwed up but it’s the black guy’s fault. Welcome to Eastern Europe…

  16. The Great Anonymous Doom says:

Théophile has been playing great. The worst players for Dinamo have been the forwards (hardly any shots even) and Stojanovic (red card)

  17. Anonymous says:

    @Bernardo

Since when is that typical Croatian?

Croats are not known for being racist toward black people.

Stop projecting the guilt in your own family history of hatred towards black folk onto others.

  18. Maminjo says:

Olmo and Theophile messed up on that first goal.

Then the ref got all emotional and red-carded Stojanovic for simply complaining about a bad call, lol.

Then Livakovic did his best “Danijel Subasic” impression watching that third goal go in. Not sure why he didn’t even attempt to move.

  19. The Great Anonymous Doom says:

Sure. But to get a second yellow over that was also ridiculous. The ref had a largely biased game. Gave Petkovic a yellow for a dive on what was actually a very hard foul. Called a foul against us on what was actually a penalty in our favor. Such is the way of European competition.

  20. Dalmate says:

    What a joke this ref… really…

Dinamo wasn’t good front of the goal and also when they have decided to play too defensively but this ref was really bad.

So, frustrating result with two beautiful chances for Dinamo finished wide. But all in all, Benfica was the better side in this match…

Dinamo was afraid and adapted a defensive style when they’re basically an offensive side. Poor Bjelica decisions with this point but also with late sub for Gojak, the guy was over after 60 mins and Bjelica has decided to continue to play with him, when we needed more impact in the middle.

  21. HajdukSplit says:

Slavia in the quarters after knocking out Sevilla in ET, scored a 119th goal winner as they were set to be eliminated on away goals

Dinamo will bitch about the non-penalty call in the 1st half but overall they were bitch slapped today by an average Benfica side

  22. Bobby V says:

Congrats Dinamo for an excellent run from a Hajduk fan.

I watch nearly every Benfica game – member of the Portuguese club in Gloucester Ma. which is across the street from where I live – the skill level between the two clubs was closer than I expected.

The biggest difference, and what ultimately decided this match, is the emotions not being controlled when some calls were going against Dinamo. Bjelica wasn’t setting a proper tone in the coaching box, becoming too animated and even, at one point, involved.

When the lack of composure really started to become apparent, Dinamo still had a chance to get an away goal and advance when it was 0-2, but the red card ended it.

Need to convince Dani Olmo to play for Croatia.

  23. Makarska says:

They did well to get this far. Nothing to complain about. Gotta be proud of what they accomplished.
Rijeka and Hajduk can dream of just qualifying.

  24. Ivan Rakitic says:

I eat my wife’s ass after she takes a dump..mmm anything for my Queen. Im such a beta bitch boy mmm yess

  25. crnkovic says:

real shame we didnt get through. I’m a dinamo fan like my grandfather was. They have to try and build on this and in doing so raise the profile of the HNL. For a club to sell benkovic, brekalo, halilovic, rog, vrsaljko, sosa, brozovic, kovacic, pjaca and others in just a few short seasons and still be able to compete like this is very impressive.

  26. KICK THE BALL says:

KICK THE BALL, KICK IT FAST AND FAR AWAY, KICK IT DOWN THE FIELD ANYWHERE, DO NOT GIVE IT TO OPPOSING PLAYERS FREELY IN FRONT OF THE GOAL, KICK THE FUCKING BALL FAR AWAY ANYWHERE, SOCCER 101 from peewee soccer school.

  27. Anonymous says:

    ^^^SO FUCKING TRUE^^^.
It’s so hard to watch to these “professionals” make 8 year olds kids soccer mistakes. If Dinamo could finish a couple of those chances, it really goes back to the first game where they should have had 2 or 3 goals. Disappointed with today’s result, ref definitely didn’t help us out any.

  28. Drek says:

Medo “”i hope you put some cash on that outcome.I remember you saying Jedvaj would go from zero to hero after scoring 2 against Spain when we played right after!!
He crapped the bed on both England goals!

  29. NK Susak says:

No shame in losing to a team like Benfica. A lot of portuguese asses were getting tight until that 71st minute. I was never high on Livakovic, but today he was impressive. Came up big and kept his cool in some big moments. When the ball left that guys foot on the last goal, not one soul in that stadium thought it had a chance. Looked like it was gonna go 20 yards over and took one of those wicked roberto carlos dips which is rare. Cant fault him on that. I agree, that there was a couple times they got too cute trying to play out from danger, and it ultimately cost them.

“Going against your own is the Croatian way?”

I’m a Catholic like the guy in that clip you’ve ridiculed, or gone against if you like.

I wont ask you what you are because it doesn’t matter, I know you’re a little idiot that wouldn’t even give a shit about Croatia if we weren’t good at sport, and that’s enough for me.

  38. Drek says:

Lika Joey <<that rooster comment was not meant for you from what I can tell.If you don’t comprehend sarcasm then You just might be a SIMPLETON!!

Way to keep it classy insulting my dead mother.Perhaps spend more time figuring out why that fisherman’s daughter hasn’t let you marry her after you knocked her up that fateful night you spiked her drink ok BRATE!She’s obviously Wiser than you.
Whose last name does your son carry …fernandez…goncalves?
Working on your grammar would help as well.i have seen 2nd graders make less mistakes at a spelling bee.
I know it’s your” DAM FONE!”

  42. Lika Joey says:

Drek I don’t comprehend sarcasm. Medo there is a time and place for everything. You’re a Lican? I would of never guessed with a name like medo. I will work on my grammar thanks for the advice

  43. Tibor Guzanović says:

@Lika Joey a lot of non Croats on Dinamo. That team and Torcida have an alliance. Ultra 4 life!

  44. Lika Joey says:

Tibor, I will never go against any Croatian team playing in Europe! I was offended by this anonymous clown. I was a little worked up!

  45. Tibor Guzanović says:

Benfica Ultras supported Croatia during the war.

Hey you guys see that guy in NZ played Chetnik song when he was shooting.

  46. Lika Joey says:

In regard to the Benfica ultras… I don’t dislike them. My point is anonymous shouldn’t side with them over other Croats. Anonymous and his dead hero jump bandwagons when it is convenient!

  47. Anonymous says:

    @Lika Joey

“Anonymous and his dead hero jump bandwagons when it is convenient!”

Let me explain something to ya, let’s say your grandfather was a Partizan that fought for Yugoslavia and communism against the Croats that fought for independence during wwii, cos I’m guessing he wouldn’t of been a chetnik, but now, if he’s still alive, he calls himself a Croat, would you call him a “bandwagoner”?
Why wouldn’t he of been a Croat during wwii but is now?

Even better, so you got Frank Tudjman a Yugoslav communist and Ante Paradžik a Catholic HOS-ovac whom the former had killed, and you consider the latter a bandwagoner?

  48. Anonymous says:

What about that recent Thompson concert in Croatia where Croats were asked to take off their HOS t-shirts which happen to say ZDS on ‘em, it was good enough to wear in war but not now.

Even funnier though, Croats shouldn’t be offended by the Red Star worn loudly and proudly by Serb waterpolo players in Croatia!

Is that Croatians going against their own like Lika Joey went against Ante Paradžik?

  49. Sandro says:

Lika Joey debating with you is like bringing a homeless guy to dinner.
You bring NOTHING to the table.

  50. Lika Joey says:

Sandro your analogies are as bad as your soccer knowledge. Another goof keyboard assasin..buy pussy face to face. Go fuck yourself!

  51. Anonymous says:

    @Lika Joey

I didn’t write that last Anonymous comment, you know I’m not the only Anonymous right, of course the guy is right, Sandro is right as well, Medo knew as well, you know these guys are trying to help you out, they’re nice guys.
    Me, I don’t like ya.

You’re still wandering on like an idiot, go back to the beginning and realise that when I said, Croatians going against one another is the Croatian way, that I was right.

I’m not a Dinamo or Hajduk fan, but I loved that Benfica knocked Dinamo out of Europe, lucky for your son he can go for Benfica now, he’s probably just humoring you by pretending to be upset that Dinamo is out, let’s be honest here, you wouldn’t know if he was.

  52. Lika Joey says:

Ante fuck you! Be man enough to post your name! Someone disagreed with your anonymous post and you get your panties in a bunch. Your a scared little man! I was just testing you! Your a super clever guy! Lol…I’m done! Go play with your girlfriend’s dick! Girlfriend isn’t a spelling mistake

  53. Sandro says:

It’s you’re a super clever guy not your Lika, but otherwise your grammar skills are improving.
I’m assuming your 6 year old son is proof reading for you!
