Croatia Thrash Argentina 3-0: The Magic Begins

26-yard Modrić blast seals the deal for Croatia

On June 21st 2018, the magic began!

The 2-0 win over Nigeria got the party started. But a 3-0 thumping of Argentina didn’t just get Croatia out of group stage, it made the team – and Croatian fans alike – believers in a World Cup Final run.

After a dicey first half which saw both Croatia and Argentina have chances at goal, Rebić opened up the scoring in the 2nd half off an Argentine goalie blunder – burying a half volley in the back of net. But it was Luka Modrić’s 26-yard strike in the 80’ that let us all know this Croatian side was for real! Ivan Rakitić would add an injury time insurance goal to rub salt in the wound of the Argentine faithful.

The Vatreni defeated Lionel Messi and Argentina 3-0 for their ever win against a South American side at the World Cup. The win also ensured that Zlatko Dalić could rest starters and already cautioned players against Iceland in the group finale to set up matches in the knockout rounds.

  1. Suba says:

We got the hoodoo of our back in relation to non South American opposition which frankly was costing us big time at world cups

That broke the shackles for us and it was the pressure and muscle of Rebic Perisic And Mandzukic that did it well done those three which changed everything after that

  2. The Truth says:

I remember when Ante wanted the “magic” to begin. He wanted the magic to begin with us walking off the field against Ukraine. Two faced yugo

  3. The truth says:

I like vlasic staying in Russia… Not that he’ll necessarily stay the whole time.. But it’s becoming clearer that what is most valuable at a young age is playing time rather than sitting on a bench. Ever more, i dress hearing our Croatian youth linked with moves to big clubs in the big 4. I know many on this site often got excited. And said, woooo! We have a Chelsea player!. But not I. Go to where you can play and develop. Only move to a big club if your actually good enough to play there

Has there been any Croatian youth that went on recently to have a good career at the club that shelled out for them?

    @truth

Damn. You’re so full of shit.

Nobody here is happy when a player leaves Croatia too young or for too little money, no matter what the team.

  5. The truth says:

Not true. For years i heard 1) if Barcelona wants him, it means he’s definitely going to be a star and he’ll be playing there soon enough 2) the academy and training is so much better there even if he doesn’t play

For years so much excitement about the youth being targeted by Barcelona, and premier league teams and juventus….i feel the board for the most part now finally gets that joke

One of my biggest sticking points on this site has been how people overrated that youth and a huge factor in that has been many of those youths being targeted and going to big time teams

  6. Maminjo says:

    You’re lying.

Nobody said anything of the sort.

Almost everyone on this site is unanimously saying (over and over again) that young players should NOT go to big clubs because of the risk of them not playing. People don’t even like it when they go to any foreign club, especially when they are under the age of 21. Vlasic to Everton, Brekalo to Wolfsburg, Palaversa to Many City…these were all met with dismay. People were actually happy to hear that Palaversa was being loaned back to Hajduk actually.

You’re saying the absolute opposite of what is actually going on here.

    Just flat out talking shit.

  7. The truth says:

Ha. Maybe now they say it because they have finally learned after years of players rotting on benches. Believe me though, these moves used to be celebrated

Truth Troll yet again doing Monday morning quarterbacking and revising who said what to claim some sort of soccer oracle and prognostication abilities.
