Oh boy. That happened tonight.
A Croatian team defeated an Italian club in the Champions League. Dinamo Zagreb slapped four goals on Atalanta – who finished 3rd in Serie A last season – in a 4-0 Champions League thumping Wednesday night at Maksimir. It was all Dinamo for 90 minutes as Marin Leovac opened up the scoring in the 10th with Mislav Oršić rattling off three goals for the CL hat trick. Goalie Dominik Livaković made a great save at point-blank range to keep the clean sheet; and Dinamo Zagreb will see themselves ahead of Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk and Atalanta after night one.
Dinamo have been embarrassed on countless Champions League nights over the past decade. Tonight, they wiped all that away. With Manchester City defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0, Dinamo are in good (early) position to finish top-three in the group. In their next game, they will travel to Manchester to take on City October 1st. It will be their toughest match of the group stage.
Oršić will be the star of the night, but Livaković and Dani Olmo shined as well.
“When Dinamo didn’t sell Livaković and Olmo, I knew that we (Dinamo) weren’t going to see the embarrassment we had in previous Champions Leagues, ” CroatianSports.com’s Matt Lebo.
LOL as a nation of under 4 million you have to be two faced. WTF anonymous what you want Croatia go go full Ustasha? LOL
@Elvis
So are you suggesting she’s a hypocrite?
Lol, what a virtuous woman the Croatian people elected to lead them, lol!
Like you Croats say, “s kim si, taki si.”
but what does she say in private ?
Dinamo still in party mode, dropped easy points today. Hopefully it’s a one off and they get their shit together.
^
Joe Simunic made that same mistake.
@Elvis
Kolinda on ZDS.
“Kad je riječ o pozdravu ‘Za dom spremni’, da, ja sam počinila grešku kada sam rekla da je to povijesni pozdrav zato što mi je to rekao više puta netko od mojih savjetnika”, rekla je.
“Prihvaćam činjenicu koju su rekli povjesničari da to nije povijesni hrvatski pozdrav”, rekla je.
“On je neprihvatljiv. Kompromitiran i neprihvatljiv”, dodala je.
ZDS ! Hrvatska till the worlds ruin!
be proud. be ready. za dom….
mental midgets
So did he play good because slavonac iz kanadia said he was shit
I’m confused or he hates him because he’s a dalmatinac
DannyJ-Truer words have never been spoken. Pasalic looked “good” because he is “good”, but you don’t win Silver Medals at the World Cup with a bunch of “good” players.
#KeepTheBarHigh
Are you a Serb by DNA or allegiance?
Let’s hope orsic and Petkovic are the new late resurgence prso’s
Orsic played in china and korea
Bjelica is a pravi red Croat from crna Goran
Don’t tell him that he’s a Serb he’ll kick your arse
Brekalo, goal and assist
Our basketball will get a chance to qualify for olympics still. Great news. And all of our NBA stars will be available and hungry
mi Slavonci!
@Dannyj
Bjelica’s grandfather is Montenegrin, but moved to Osijek and settled there.
The rest of his family are Slavonian Croats, from Osijek and the surrounding area.
SNK Seljacki Nogometni Klub Dinamo Zagreb won with a disgrace of a Village Stadion not up to Champions League Standards. Mislav Orsic scored a hattrick out of no where not buying into him yet. Orsic was playing in China and Japan for the last 3 years.
Pretty sure on the Croatian feed the commentators said Dino peric was potential Repka material
Didn’t really notice Moro too much
I guess it’s a good thing
Commentators really talking up Ivanusec as well when he cane on
Maybe if they make far olmo will say I’ll play for cro…
Petkovic looked good. He did try to get cute a bit with dribbling
Orsic basically demanding some Repka mins
Why did I think Bjelica was a Serb?
He def has potential to be Repka coach knowing some of the kids already
I thought Pasalic looked good
Don’t know if that’s cause the Croatian feed was talking him up some
But seemed better then most of their team
All this money build a stadium man
It’s a shame they have that euro cup next year and cro doesn’t have any games
People want to visit and everyone knows our football
Let’s go Dinamo keep it up show man city u are there to play
Pasalic came on and made a big difference for Atlanta missed too chances but was their best player tonight
Great win
Fuck Europa league. All our domestic teams should focus on champion league.
Yup.
You get about a million Euro for every point you get in the group stage.
Hrvat – I didn’t know it was that high of a payout either, but seems that number is correct

Someone told me Dinamo payout for the win today is 2.7 million euro. Anyone know if this is correct? Seems high.

Omg truth called the score 4 nill Dinamo or was it I’m all for bill on Dinamo?
Atalanta were over-run by a packa hungry wolves!
This is one of the best Dinamo performances EVER in europe…
If they play like this at home, and the Maksimir crowd gets behind them like today, Man City and Shaktar are gonna have a tough time beating them at home.
Dinamo does have a real good chance to beat Shaktar at home, as they are IMHO worse than Atalanta.
I’m curious to see how Dinamo performs on the road, as this will really determine whether they are cut out for second place in the group.
Another win (or in some cases, a draw) and Dinamo will continue in Europa.
But we get to see how well Shaktar plays against Atalanta next round.
Would be very interesting to see what Dinamo can do in Ukraine.
Hopefully this indicates Dinamo’s way forward through the future. With Mamic in control, Olmo would definitely have been sold after CL qualification, maybe Petkovic as well. Hold onto the stars so that the team won’t be hamstrung when the tourney begins. CRO league is weak so all teams will need to sell to stay viable, but at least let’s see teams play at their strongest before dismantling and rebuilding.
Yea and missed badly.
He doesn’t have it.
Pasalic has a couple looks at goal if u guys rewatch
side point – if it came down to it, DZ now basically assured of holding the tiebreaker over Atalanta. For UEFA, 1st tiebreker is head-head points. 2nd tiebreaker is head-head goal differential (overall group GD is way down in the pecking order).
Pasalic does have quality moments and has an eye for goal but lazy which is frustrating
I am still hopeful that he takes the next level up with attitude or competitiveness otherwise he will continue to be largely ineffective I’m afraid
Pasalic over rated. He is not national team caliber.
This game was incredible and the fan support amazing. I said it before 2nd place is possible and It will be a disappointment if they don’t proceed to the next stage.
nothing for him to redeem Suba. He came in as a sub and I hardly saw him on the field…nothing different than most games he plays.
That’s right the Atalanta coaching staff would now be thinking that Pasalic is not the best Croatian prospect going around however he might redeem himself on their home against Dinamo
I’ve always said Pasalic is very ineffective. Not sure who and why anyone considers him NT worthy. He might be good to fill in for 15-20 minutes and not much more.
Yea I guess that Livaković save at least proves that he’s an above average keeper.
How about Pašalić?
Dude is invisible. Honestly, he’s always invisible for us too. Half of Dinamo’s players are better than him.
Bjelica’s resume is much better than Dalić’s.
But we took a gamble on Dalić and it paid off.
But it doesn’t mean that Dalić is a better coach than Bjelica.
What a game!
Atalanta finished the 2018/2019 season in 3rd place of the Italian Seria A and currently sit in tied for 5th place for this season.
THIS Dinamo team would probably be an above average team in that league…
BTW – what an amazing save by Livakovic!
Wow
At this rate one more slip up by Dalic welcome Bjelica
Hopefully Dinamo can keep playing with this intensity against Shaktar.
Very good call not selling Olmo.
Perisic with the assit against the Serbs. Nice!
Amazing atmosphere at Maksamir.
Dinamo is fun to watch.
A team full of dribblers (Olmo, Petković, Oršić, Moro…)
Oršić is so savvy.
He scores by “passing” the ball into the open space, when 99% of players would have closed their eyes and tried to crack it as hard as they could on goal.
Totally deserves his National Team call-up.
Yeeeeeessssss lets goooo Oršić!
2-0 this is great

LEOVAC!!!
yes please if anyone has a link to the dinamo game it would be great. also does anyone know whether coric has played for almeria yet?
Link?
Sosavic
Well the kid is a Hercegovac from Posušje, so you can tell him that he’s not Croatian and see how far you get with that.
Sosa is from Scarface the movie its not a Croatian surname it’s Hispanic.
Oh damn.
I didn’t realize that Bradaric is a LEFT back. That’s very good.
We have Sosa, Bradaric and Colina. All left back players, and all of them between the ages of 19 and 21.
This is very good.
I don’t know much about Domagoj Bradaric (I keep getting him confused with the untalented Filip Bradaric that keeps getting a callup).
He is a fullback, which is a position of need. However, Vrsaljko is coming back and I would be 100% committed to starting Vrsaljko once he’s ready (with Jedvaj being his backup). I don’t care much for Karlo Bartolec. I’d give his spot away for a younger player with potential. I don’t think Bartolec has any.
Speaking of youngsters…there’s also that other French League player Toma Basic. If he’s still doing good there, I’d give him a look.
Also, I noticed that Ante Palaversa has been doing well in Belgium. He started the first five games of the season and then missed the last two (due to injury). He made a “team of the week” lineup too. Pretty damn good for a 19 year old foreign kid. Hopefully he continues to play and develop.
Dinamo u19’s beat Atalanta today in their Youth Champions League home opener. Great performance from keeper Renato Josipović.
Hopefully Maksimir will be rocking tonight. If we can start out with a win that would be incredible.
Yeah Maminjo, I definitely agree on Sosa, but maybe even would go with Bradaric. Yes, he’s young and a bit inexperienced, but he has been starting all year for Lille and has been one of their best players. I think I’d give him a shot sooner rather than later. But, I pretty much agree on everything else you said. I’ve been saying a lot recently, only call the U21 eligible players up if they’re going to play a part, even as a sub.
@vuki
I would only ever call up the U21 players you intend on playing, or integrating into the team for the upcoming Euro2020.
Brekalo and Vlasic are no brainers (and both should start).
A good u21 player that I would call up, who would necessarily play but may end up even starting at Euro2020 is Borna Sosa.
He is playing at Stuttgart and already has chemistry with Vlasic and Brekalo on that left side with them on the U21 team. He is also alot more technically gifted and skilled than Borna Barisic (who is also decent).
He’s a guy I would test in friendlies and see if his added offense gives us something more than playing Barisic there fulltime.
Benkovic and Caleta-Car should be getting callups as substitutes…but I would definitely try Benkovic in friendlies, because I think he might already be better than Vida or Lovren. He’s close.
The only other guys I would maybe call up are Moro and Krovinovic (since he’s older and will likely have a great year at West Brom).
Majer and Ivanusec are excellent, but too inexperienced to play on the senior squad.
Not quite sure why it spaced out the mids like that. Should have just done them all like the forwards even though I didn’t mean to do the forwards like that.
Atalanta is going to be very tough. I think Shaktar will be easier to get points from, but Dinamo truly is capable of stealing points from all 3 teams. Atalanta plays quite attacking which could either be very tough for Dinamo giving them no attacks or could allow them a lot of opportunities off the counter. Really just depends on how everything plays out.
Off topic question, but a post from one of the recent posts got me thinking, should we ignore the U21 qualifying and just call up the youngsters that probably should be getting into the team or let them stay with the U21s? A follow up question would be, ignoring any injuries, what would your 23-man squad be for October? I’m not 100% sure on the final few spots in each position but that’s what I want people’s opinions on.
Goalkeepers:
Livakovic, Kalinic, Semper/Sluga/Posavec (doesn’t really since they likely won’t play)
Defenders:
Lovren, Vida, Vrsaljko, Jedvaj, Katic, Benkovic/Caleta-Car, Bradaric/Sosa/Barisic (2 of the 3, I prefer the first 2 honestly)
Midfielders:
Modric, Rakitic, Brozovic, Kovacic, Vlasic, Rog/Moro/Pasalic/Majer/Ivanusec/Sunjic/Krovinovic (2 of these, I’d choose from 2 of the first 4)
Forwards:
Kramaric
Perisic
Rebic
Brekalo
Petkovic
