Euro 2020 Draw: Here’s What We Know

November 20, 2019

Hrvatska ždrijeb

The Euro 2020 draw takes place November 30th at noon (ET). It can be seen on ESPNNews in the United States.

Croatia will be placed in Pot 2 which means they cannot play France, Poland, Switzerland, Netherlands, or Russia in group play. It also means they will not play in St. Petersburg/Copenhagen or Amsterdam/Bucharest because they cannot play Russia or the Netherlands in group play and all countries who qualify and have host cities in the tournament; will play in those cities.

The following gets a bit complicated – so just follow me on this – or take a look at the Euro 2020 Wiki page for all the details.

Croatia can only be drawn into four possible groups:

Group A with Italy. Games will be played in Rome/Baku.

Group D with England. Games will be played in London/Glasgow.

Group E with Spain. Games will be played in Bilbao/Dublin.

Group F with Germany. Games will be played in Munich/Budapest.

Croatian fans all over Europe are rooting for the German group for travel reasons. There’s tons of Croatians in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with Budapest only a 6-hour drive from Zagreb.

The Vatreni have recent history with both Spain and England; and have never lost to Italy in a competitive game. No matter who Croatia gets drawn with at Euro 2020, it’s going to be a spicy affair.

  1. Iggy Iggy says:

Wait, so no matter WHO we draw we are playing effectively an AWAY game against them in what’s meant to be a neutral tournament? This is absolute fucking *HORSESHIT* m8. Can’t believe how bloody rigged it is, some true scumbaggery going on here!

  2. Medo says:

The most important aspect of the draw will be praying Portugal isn’t drawn into your group as they are a pot 3 team…that automatically becomes the de facto group of death!

  3. Maminjo says:

    Depends on matchups.

Ukraine usually does well against Portugal, and poorly against us. Not sure why. But if we draw them both, it’s good for us.

Same goes for a lot of teams. I’m sure Italy is PRAYING to not be drawn with us, same probably goes for Germany. Yet, the Germans ALWAYS beat Portugal. A Germany/Portugal pair in our group would seem scary, but I think we at get through in that one as well.

I just noticed that Denmark is a home team in Pot 3.
Denmark is the new Greece of antifootball, and have an undefeated streak going back to 2016 (in competitive games) I think.

They’ll probably draw the Pot A and Pot B team, and narrowly beat the Pot D team. That group will be a messy mix of head-to-head goal differential calculations.

I’d rather draw Portugal than deal with that nonsense.

  4. Maminjo says:

Oh, I didn’t realize that we can only be drawn against Italy, Spain, England and Germany.

All of them are home seeds?!?

    Lol. This is incredibly stupid.

I guess Germany makes the most sense as there will be a ton of Croats there…plus Joakim Lowe is a fraud coach who is slowly being exposed. I can see Dalić outwitting him with a tactical change.

Italy’s squad sucks, but they’re good at home and they have Mancini as coach, so it probably would just end up a draw. But we seem to play very well in Italy for some odd reason.

England will get a VERY favorable whistle and would be the most frustrating team to play because of it. They will get a penalty call in their favor for sure, and their media would be harping about them getting revenge for the World Cup (even if it was a referee assisted win). We already humiliated them on the biggest stage, so there is nothing to gain by drawing them. Would rather avoid this circus.

Spain wouldn’t be bad to draw. I like the budding rivalry we have with them in sports over the recent years.

  5. Mile says:

For arguments sake, let’s assume that Croatia finishes 2nd in whatever group they are in, since they will play a very good #1 seed on the road. The only group in which finishing 2nd means they play a round of 16 game against a group winner would be if they finish 2nd behind Germany in group F. They would then play the group D winner which will most likely be England. But the round of 16 game against England would be in Dublin. That would be VERY interesting. Croatia would play another 2nd place team for groups A, D and E, but we don’t know who that would be right now for D and E. It could be France, Poland or Switzerland if seeding goes to form. If Croatia is in group A and finish second to Italy, they would likely play Russia or Denmark in the round of 16, whoever finishes second behind Belgium.

  6. BZ says:

Avoid Portugal! I remember when ppl wanted Portugal at Euro 2016, and then they got what they asked for.

…but Corrupt Ukraine and Stomping Portugal would be ok with me.

  7. Dannyj says:

I really do think if we drew Portugal we will take it to them this time
Ronaldo is still Ronaldo but we have a much better mentality this time
Modric is leaving it all on the field again and more so

  8. Dannyj says:

If u think back of all games in the past euros
    08 Turkey was heartbreaking yes
    12. We got screwed
    16. I would say is the one that haunts this group the most They got sucked into that anti football trash

  9. Maminjo says:

Outside of Euro2004, We’ve never been knocked out of the Euros because a team was better than us.

It was always a massive referee blunder…
Or it was some sort of smothering anti football game….
    (or a bit of both)

Euro96 loss to Germany was poor refereeing
Euro2008 was Turkish anti football (and a ton of luck)
Euro2012 was poor reffing against Spain
Euro2016 was both Portuguese anti football and a referee ignoring fouls and keeping the cards in his pocket

  10. BZ says:

Belgium or Ukraine gonna be pissed, Russia and Denmark at home won’t be pot 2&3 cakewalks. Plus Russia and Denmark will have some serious advantage vs the pot 4 team. Belgium can handle it, but Ukraine would be good as eliminated, before the tourney starts.

  11. Maminjo says:

Belgium ALWAYS gets the easy group.

Not surprised that they avoided all of the difficult Pot B teams and got Russia instead.

Yea, Denmark is a tough Pot 3 team, but they are much more of a threat to Russia than they could ever be to Belgium.

  12. Poglavnik says:

    What’s everyone complaining about?
If you were the host nation of a tournament you should get home games. Imagine Zagreb being a host city and not getting Croatia games.

  13. Poglavnik says:

This board is just full of complainers.
This team gets easy groups this city gets to host their own country (imagine that?!) these guys always get the calls. Fuuuuck… I’d imagine most of you dont hold yourselves accountable for much either.

  14. gbvh says:

Different story when there are 12 hosts, not one or two.
Give “host” cities a home game then, not all three (in several cases).

Anyway, I’d rather the thing was in one country. Two, tops.

Poglavnik connects internet banter to complaining. Vijesti!!

  15. Maminjo says:

There are probably 9 actual teams that could win this thing.

But it sucks that 5 out of those 9 play at home.

I wish we were able to host (especially with our insane home record). If we ever host a Euro, we’ll totally win it.

  16. Mostar says:

Someone asked how tickets were allocated in a previous post

I went to Euro2016. You have to apply on UEFA.com you have the option of being placed in the Croatias supporter section or the neutral supporters.

Tickets are split between home, away, and neutral. Neutral has the most tickets i believe

  17. BZ says:

Finally got around to watching the Georgia game:
    1) Contrary to reports, Rebic was best player in first half. Solid in the 2nd half.
    2)Juranovic > Bartolec
    3) Who was that man? I’d like to shake his hand, who made Brozo our steady CDM. Badelj was a nightmare.
4)Rog has improved his balance. Still not World Class though, Soul. Not supplanting anyone in our midfield anytime soon.
5)Can we all agree, if your last name is Kalinic, you are not NT calibre?
6)Peric fun CB to watch, too bad we don’t need a CB that drifts up the pitch.

  18. Dannyj says:

    Thanks Mostar that was me
I need me a cro ticket
    Never been live.
    I’ll die happy after this
Now watch my ticket be to ducking Azerbaijan lol

  19. Dannyj says:

Sure feels good not having to be in playoff
Could u imagine tho u draw us as a pot 4 lol
    Not exactly Finland…

  20. Slavonac from Canada says:

here’s my take on this topic!

I do believe that playing at home, in front of your home crowd has its benefits but I also know that if the home team loses possession advantage and they aren’t as dominant as their fans hoped they would be, things go downhill fast!

The one thing that stands out with this Croatian team is that we are not usually defending or playing a counter-attack game as much as we used to. often times its our team that controls the midfield and have the upper hand in possession and especially if we aren’t feeling overly cocky cause we went up 1 goal.

this past world cup, I felt very confident in every game except the first 25 minutes against England. we have the ability to play with anyone and to be honest, most of the time we get a fair amount of our own fans that tend to make themselves heard. its true when we say “malo nas je, al nas ima”…its definitely uplifting to see and hear our fans cheering so passionately! I’m also happy to say its been nice to see that we haven’t had any retards trying to sabotage the team recently, nor have I witnessed anyone circulating anti-Modric or anti-HNS articles recently! ;)

  21. Crnkovic says:

yeah Slavonac I agree. Things are good. I think sometimes like Poglavnik said people seem to be hell bent on finding some sort of hidden trap or injustice or reason why we are going to lose. I remember Bilic befor ethe world cup talking about how tough our group is. How amazing Nigeria would be, how unbeatable and strong Iceland are, how scary Argentina is. I mean there was nothing wrong with his analysis of the particular strengths of our opponents, it’s that the tone was kind of negative.I’ve been on this site for more than 4 years now and the amount of negativity is staggering at times. Truth complains about the homers, but in reality there are far more doom and gloom peddlers. whether its how bad some of our players are, home team advantage for the Euros, or an international conspiracy to wipe out the ‘white race’….LOL

  22. Crnkovic says:

A lot of delusional people. I mean people will write off certain opponents as being ‘garbage’ with out ever having watched them play. People will say slovakia are garbage, without seeing that actually they are country with a big football tradition and one of the best playmakers (hamsik), best defenders (skriniar), best holding players (cant remember his name now). you have to respect your opponents always always always, but never fear them. never never never. that comes from self respect and faith.

  23. Crnkovic says:

Truth will say we are nothing but a middle level european team. so what is slovakia then? what are the danes, the swedes, austria, russia, turkey…etc. romania. people dont think straight smh

  24. Iggy says:

Do you two fuckfaces ever listen to yourself?

Do you know how important it is to WIN the group to avoid playing France away int he round of 16 or some BS?

That’s going to be made MUCH, MUCH more difficult given we have to now BEAT germany, spain, italy or england AWAY to do that, and here are you shitlickers saying oh it’s all good, playing away isnt even a disadvantage, nothing to see here!

Definitely not massive favouritism of big cuntries by UEFA in trying to hand-pick the knockout round teams, NOPE none of that going on.

    Fuck off, cunts.

  25. Crnkovic says:

Iggy you shouldn’t say things to people online you wouldn’t say to their face. The fact is big developed countries with infrastructure and big market will host tournaments. Small countries are always disadvantaged in one way or another, its always like that. Take the wc final. Both French goals in the first half were garbage BUT the defending from the free kick was shocking from us. Leading to own goal. And perisic closed his eyes for the hand ball. So I’d rather focus on my own team

  26. Iggy Iggy says:

No it’s not always like this, it’s NEVER been like this before, other than the host all games have been on neutral ground. Now it’s all the major countries at home and all the smaller countries away from home, this is not the norm, ytf are u defending it?

  27. Mark says:

This a BS format designed to fuck us little guys. So you happen to knock off one host country then you face the next one again on their home turf? Everyone is tough at home! This euro is a write off for us.
And Why the fuck does Russia get to “host” again?

  28. CRNI HRVATI says:

Portugal still has Ronaldo and Jao Felix. Remember they are also big catholics so God Jesus Christ is also on their side to as well as ours.

  29. Mile says:

We just have to find a way to get out of the first round because nobody hosts a 2nd round or QF game the way it is set up. Only England can host playoff games, and that is the SF and final, but they have to get there first. I would like to see Croatia get group F, because if they get 2nd behind Germany, they would likely play England in Dublin in the 2nd round.

  30. Vis says:

We can beat any team at any time. The more I think about it the only three national teams I really think will cause us problems are the Netherlands, France and Belgium.
