Croatia Fall Short To Spain In 2020 Euro Handball Final

January 25, 2020

The Croatian Cowboys had too many chances to lift their first European crown. They were up three goals in the first half but never pulled away. Croatia were then down four goals early in the 2nd half but managed to tie the game up late. They were down one with a minute left but Karačić was called for traveling, which guaranteed the title for Spain.

Two things I still don’t clearly understand about handball:

1. How is there no shot clock?

2. These guys are clearly taking too many steps or landing as they shoot EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Where’s my handball expert?

An unstoppable force will meet an immovable object Sunday night in Stockholm.

Croatia will play Spain in the Gold Medal match of the Euro 2020 Handball championships at 10:30AM (ET). The two sides played to a 22-22 draw in the final match of the group round and are both still undefeated in the tournament.

Croatia beat Norway – arguably one of the best teams at the tournament – in double overtime Friday and will be riding high on emotion going into their rematch with Spain. The cardiac Croatian Cowboys came from behind against Spain and Norway in the second halves of both games and have shown phenomenal fortitude.

Handball tournaments are few and far between and this is a fantastic opportunity to get into the sport. I highly recommend you wake up and catch this game Sunday morning wherever you may be in North America…or the world.

Well we don’t seem to have water polo or tennis left so hopefully these guys can deliver the goods. They seem to be really good at winning close games so that’s nice to see, since you know the Croatian way is to do it as hard as possible lol.

  2. Suba says:

Cmon boys let’s get revenge for the water polo loss

  3. Maminjo says:

Why is that goofy Norwegian smiling (in the photo above) while watching Željko Musa hit the game-winning goal?

  4. Maminjo says:

The Croatia vs Spain sports rivalry continues.

The two most successful nations in the World when it comes to the major team sports (football, basketball, waterpolo, handball, and tennis).

Croatia & Spain are the only nations in the World that are ranked top-15 in all these sports.

Top 9 if you exclude basketball (but Croatia was actually ranked 9th in basketball per FIBA, a few months ago, now they’re 14th).

  5. CroatianPerson85 says:

@Maminjo – agreed with the Cro vs Spain comment re sports rivalry at the moment – soccer waterpolo handball. I don’t follow enough of the other sports other than soccer so correct me if I am wrong, don’t Serbs have decent or better basketball, tennis, possibly waterpolo, don’t think rukomet, records in the last 10 years up until recently?

Some would argue Djokovic isn’t full Serb but you get what I mean. How have they been at the other sports? Part of me feels aside from 94 or 95 in Toronto Basketball world championships, they’ve been better at basketball. How does Cro honestly compare now vs Serbs in basketball?

  6. gbvh says:

Vrsaljko in starting XI for Atleti.

    0-0 halftime (shocking).

  7. Maminjo says:

Serbs are good at Basketball, Waterpolo and Tennis.

But they suck in football and handball
(and football is the most important of them all)

They may improve in these latter two sports, but historically Serbs are generally never good at tennis (this is all because of Djoković). They’ve also never been good enough at football or handball either. So, them being good in three of these five sports is actually an anomaly.

Croatia has (and always will be) good in all five of these sports. We’re a much more balanced sporting nation (despite having half the population).

  8. Maminjo says:

Vrsaljko started and played the full game with an above average rating.

This is the best news we could get for our National team.

  9. gbvh says:

^ Didn’t play full game, Vrsaljko.

  10. Nikola Vukmanić (vuki) says:

I don’t know much about handball, but that ending was dreadful. Complete choke. Had the momentum and the man advantage and wasted it.

  11. Elvis says:

Now that SPIC is gonna show up to brag
    About Spain.

  12. Maminjo says:

    LOL, okay okay.

    Vrsaljko played 88 minutes.

  13. Nizic says:

That was laughable and embarrassing final , the other games I could say rather exciting that’s what happens when you think it’s in da bag
    Za Dom

  14. gbvh says:

^ the game went to about the 97th-98th minute. thanks in no small part to leganes goalie’s drama bs.

  15. The Spaniard says:

Hahaha stupid Croats! It’s almost getting boring pointing out your repeated losses to Spain.. did someone actually compare Spain and Croatia in sports because they are both in the top 15?! This is like comparing lebron James and the 15th man on the Lakers negative they are both amongst the top 15 basketball players in Los angeles. The difference is Croatia is around 15 in all those sports and wins nothing and Spain is the best and constantly wins. World Cup, Euro cup, nadal in tennis, basketball not even close, and handball to the list. And now the HNLs highest transfer fee ever was to sell a Spanish kid this week. Hahaha

    Puta Maricon !

  17. BZ says:

Happy Sime got a surprise start. Trippier and Arias are both injured, but I expect them back soon. Hope Sime can carve out some time for himself long term, we want to see where he is before this summer.

I wonder how he really looked, and not just some ranking or summary by a website.

@gbvh- Important distinction with that unusual 88th minute sub of a defender in a 0-0 tie. Hope it wasn’t due to pain in his knee.

  18. Maminjo says:

    @ Spainard

Isn’t Spain ranked below Croatia in football?

Isn’t the best player in La Liga a Croat? and isn’t the best young Spanish prospect developed in Croatia?

    You’re welcome btw.

  19. the REAL Croat says:

The boys played their hearts out today

Just didn’t have any gas left in the tank after the semis double overtime

Handball fitness levels completely vs. football – rare for games to go to over-time (never mind double over-time) so they’re ready to play the 60 min

Duvnjak tried his best to lead by example – and played w heart of a lion for the flag – but they just didn’t have left in the tank

Feel bad for him – you could tell from his face – he really wanted to get his first gold – but just couldn’t make it happen today

    Couple shots of post etc

Cowboys should be commended for excellent tournament

Anyone casting shade on them is an anti-patriotic jealous moron who most likely watched the game from their mom’s basement

  20. Iggy Iggy says:

That’s a shame but good job winning silver

  21. AB says:

    Great effort to our rukometaši

A bit like our vatreni, they probably played their final before the final
