Ivanišević Headed To Tennis Hall Of Fame

January 29, 2020

The always animated, full of personality, foul-mouthed Goran Ivanišević is headed to the international tennis Hall of Fame, the ATP has reported. Ivanišević posted fantastic career numbers – 22 titles and one remarkable Wimbledon championship – but will always be remembered for his fantastic commentary before, during, and after matches.

Ivanišević was a big server and his best matches were always played on grass, where he made four Wimbledon finals in his career, finally defeating Pat Rafter in 2001 as a wild card in an epic five-set match. It’s well deserved and I wish more tennis players were outspoken today like they were in the 80s and 90s. It really does add some spice to the sport.

Here’s my favorite Ivanišević outtake of all time:

Not to mention, his return to Split after winning the Wimbledon title was something from a Hollywood movie. The entire Splitska Riva was packed as Ivanišević arrived on a boat.

And Pog spot on, i remember seeing him play before HRV was even independent that’s how long ago it was! And my Dad was like you can only support him if he’s Croatian (weren’t immediately sure at that stage had to play under Jugo) thankfully of course he is hehe, but that’s how far back he went, to the early 90s. Prolly the first Croatian sportsperson of note i ever remember seeing on TV.

  2. Poglavnik says:

Yeah he was the first true Croatian athlete I remember following. I remember finding out Sakic and John Kordic were Croatian Canadians too. Remember my stari getting really choked when those cops killed Kordic.

  3. Poglavnik says:

I remember seeing a Croatia Mondetta sweater in the early 90’s at the mall and freaking out. Getting super excited to ask my old man to buy it for me and that getting shot down and feeling embarrassed cuz it was the pineapple Grb..

It seems like Marko Pjaca will be loaned out to Anderlecht in Belgium. Anderlecht is a big team but they’re having a horrible season.

  5. Maminjo says:

    Anderlecht?

He may as well come back to Dinamo. At least they know how to develop players, especially Croats.

His career will die in Belgium, like Halilović’s career.

  6. Soul Champ says:

Nothing better than watching Ivanišević left hand smooth serve and volley game.

Jebi ga he could of won more but no matter what it was entertaining.

He partied in NYC for every US Open.

Wimbledon was going to be it, in dedication to Dražen Petrović no less.
