The Weekend Water Cooler: EURO 2020 Moved To December???

March 13, 2020

EURO 2020 UPDATE: UEFA is meeting on Tuesday to discuss when to play the tournament due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The original plan was to move it to the summer of 2021, however, there are rumors to play it this December to allow domestic leagues to finish their seasons, The Telegraph reports.

If EURO 2020 gets moved to December, that means we will have two tournaments played back-to-back in the winter as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will begin in November.

Strange times we’re living in…

The entire planet has been flipped upside down this past week with the news of the coronavirus officially being elevated to a pandemic. 90% of sports around the globe has been suspended until further notice. Players, coaches, and owners across North America and Europe have contracted the virus which has halted all play until April; at the earliest.

FIFA and UEFA will meet on Tuesday to discuss moving Euro 2020 to 2021 amid the Coronavirus outbreak, which is likely to happen. This year’s Champions League may be cancelled as well.

I don’t know what the logistics would be moving Euro 2020 12 months down the line, but if it happens, the big question for Croatians would be if Luka Modrić is still up for it. By the time Euro 2021 kicks off next June, Modrić would be a ripe 35 years old and would surely not be playing at Real Madrid during that time. We have more questions at this point in time but Tuesday is going to be a huge news day in the world of football. Hopefully we’ll get some answers.

Well if Football is a drug, than I’m a drug addict! And I’m definitely going through some MAJOR withdrawal symptoms.

Current League leaders in Europe will be declared winners (ie Liverpool, Juve, etc.)

Champions League will be cancelled. So teams that really crapped out like Real Madrid and Liverpool get a free pass.

Euro 2021 will most likely happen now. Modric will be apart of the squad if he’s content with possibly being a sub. Dalic may even elevate him to a player/coach to make up for him not being a guaranteed starter.

Vatreni could use his experience late in games to keep things steady. Not to mention the influence and leadership he would have on other players in the Locker room.

Also Football will likely resume in the fall. So guys like Modric get a MAJOR break with their aging bodies. So Luka will be able to save up some serious miles, increasing the likely hood he will participate in a swan song in Summer ’21.

  2. gbvh says:

Modric for Croatia a year from now?
Not a sub, in my opinion.

Bein Sports has a Turkish game at 1 p.m.
Never been so excited to watch Turkish fixture before … jebi ga!!

  3. Pero says:

Seriously…all this sports talk…where’s anonymous and his constant obsessive babbling about communist Croats and Ustasa.

  4. Maminjo says:

Can they do an autumn or winter Euro?

They can use it as a test to see how the winter World Cup in 2022 will fare. They can also just scrap the Qatar Winter World Cup anyway, as nobody seems to want it there.

  5. Iggy Iggy says:

I would prefer it in december cos i’ll prolly be on leave so can more easily watch the 2 am or 4 am games Aussie time tbh

  6. NK Susak says:

Having it in 2021 would drop it in the middle of a world cup qualifying year. Youd have important international dates from March through November with a major tournament smack in the middle of it. Unless they push qualifying into the following year since its scheduled for the winter anyway. Push the tournament to September/October and delay the starts of the leagues. Cancel the nations league which consists of 6 international games in September through November anyway. Whats the weather gonna be like in lets say Copenhagen or St Petersburg if its held in December?

  7. Dannyj says:

Ya December no go for weather

    U would think late summer??
    That would be cool

No way modric doesn’t play next year

Ya forget the stupid League of Nations
    This may work

  8. Niko says:

Euro soccer dosnt really have to many free windows throughout the calendar year if you really look at it! They haven’t publicly addressed it because they want to do it this summer. Between finishing champions league, all the qualifiers for the next champions/ UEFA cup, nations league, domestic leagues, domestic cups, FIFA club championship( new one) and I’m sure I’m missing things. Then they gotta figure out this years relegation/ promotion situations as well as awarding titles and champions league spots… and we know these fucks don’t like giving up money, so either teams are gonna play 4 games a week or they gotta squeeze things in this summer somehow

  9. Niko says:

Also my guess is they hold it in Germany or a small group of countries that can handle it… It won’t make sense to fly all over Europe with a time crunch, especially with corona fears still out there and what that could mean to continental spread

  10. Soul Champ says:

Time cycle through the greatest Croatian sports moments of the last 30 years.

Starting with Boban flying kick !!

    Stay safe momci

Need as many of us here as possible.

    Bog I Hrvati.

  11. Miloš Hvar says:

Instead of time cycle how about rank the sporting moments. Or a bracket where we vote. Seeds moments 1-16 would be cool.

  12. Dannyj says:

I hope ticket buyers get first chance
Tho I was looking forward to going to Scotland
But another trip to Germany would be ok

    As long as we play
    It’s our year boys!

  13. Iggy Iggy says:

Man this is becoming ridiculous, atm im just trying to find enough supplies of toilet paper and pantry foods, lol. Crazy!

  14. Maminjo says:

Isn’t it funny how ONLY the anglo-countries are committing these zombie-apocalypse-fearing actions?

    Why toilet paper? lol

It’s literally only USA, Canada, Australia and the UK.

You go to Croatia, and nobody is clearing out the toilet paper, or buying hundreds of bottles of water. No waiting in line for hours or fist fights for a piece of paper to wipe your ass with lol.

This is why I tell everyone in the diaspora to hold onto your culture dearly.

These new countries have no base culture or foundation. Just a bunch of lost sheep following a herd.

  15. Maminjo says:

It is our f’n year man.

This is what pisses me off the most.

The French players are not having great years. They’re not winning this one, despite all the oddsmakers having them as one of the favorites. No chance.

I can’t believe England is at the top of a lot of these charts. No chance they win. They’re barely in the top 8.

Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, France and Germany are all ahead of England.

  16. Niko says:

Hey on the bright side, if they end up playing behind closed doors, not many teams will have more experience than us…

  17. Stipe says:

It’ll kill me if Luka Modric doesn’t play if the Euros get postponed.

At the same time I don’t blame him. I’m older now, I get it. He did a lot for the repka.

  18. Anonymous says:

@”Maminjo”, yes the U.S., Australia and Canada are so inferior that the rest of the world is trying to immigrate there. LOL! You’re such a fucking antiWhite moron.

  19. Anonymous says:

“Maminjo” could care less if future Croatians looks like Indians, as they long as perform “Croatians folk dance”.

People who can’t deal with today’s reality pretend ustasha are still fighting chetniks and communists and whoever somewhere. Meanwhile, each white country becomes less and less white everyday, but what does that matter? The Chetniks are coming!
    Good God man.

  22. Iggy Iggy says:

Hey on the bright side, if they end up playing behind closed doors, not many teams will have more experience than us

    lmao true true!

Just came back from the shops and again not a single roll of toilet paper to be found anywhere, just ridiculous. Amazing the herd mentality of stocking up on these things..

  23. Anonymous says:

I disagree Maminjo, i have cousins in Cro that have posted pictures of empty shelves in stores

  24. Anonymous says:

I’ve heard the same from relatives. Does this mean Croatia’s culture is multiculturalism like those countries Maminjo mentions?

  25. Maminjo says:

Can you share the photos your cousins posted of these so-called barren shelves?

Can you also share some videos of people (including old women) getting into fist fights for toilet paper like they’re doing in the US and Australia?

Croatia’s supply chain is probably not as dynamic as these Western countries’ to be able to re-stock quickly enough to even a mild change in purchasing habits (especially on the islands), but they haven’t really had to.

Mind you, Croatia is actually in lock-down mode too…with cafes and restaurants in Istra being shut down for a month due to the proximity with Italy, and cops actually breaking up gatherings and telling people to isolate. Their situation is much worse than Aus, US, Canada…yet the people are far less panicked.

Here are a couple articles about some English blogger checking out how the Croatian stores have been impacted:

Plus, if there really are shortages in Croatian stores, it’s probably some Aussie tourists that are buying things up. :)
