Šimunić destroys Serbia’s Suljemani in 2013

Croatia had never lost to Serbia in three previous meetings leading up to their 2014 World Cup qualifying match in Belgrade September 6th, 2013. And Josip Šimunić kept it that way.

With the match tied 1-1 in the 80th minute, a Croatian corner kick was quickly cleared putting only Šimunić between Suljemani and a wide open break-away. Šimunić made sure the Serb was never getting close to goal – and for a brief moment in time – became a 4-ton freight train to derail any chance of a Serbian winner.

It will unarguably be the most celebrated red card in Croatian football history. Joe knew it. We knew it. And every Croatian on this planet was completely fine with it. The match ended 1-1. #legend

  1. Aussie Croat says:

I remember watching Simmo completely toy with dudes in that Melbourne Knights backline in the 90’s. Calm, composed and hard at the ball. He was awesome to watch. He completely took the piss out of people that he was in a tussle with.

Took the piss = embarrassed, made a fool of, etc.

  2. BZ says:

The presence of mind required to execute that move is underrated! I want that guy in the trenches with me.

    ZDS!

  3. Maminjo says:

Was never a fan of Šimunić as a player due to the many mistakes he made, but this was pretty funny.

  4. King bronk says:

Another example of croatia being robbed by referees! Suleimani clearly extended his arm into simunic

  5. Slavonac from Canada says:

Šimunić did what he had to do in that play. We setup horribly on that corner with only Joe really able to defend…terrible coverage defensively for us.

  6. BZ says:

Slavonac-If we could just be an average set piece team, we’d be reigning World Champs. Dalic needs to bring in a Scandinavian consultant.

  7. Soul Champ says:

    Big Joe .. 1 red + 3 yellow = LEGEND!

    @ Slavonac

Plus we were up a man I believe?

How does that gypsy get free for a break away?

Mandžukić was in beast mode as well.

    @ BZ

    Set pieces!!

    It is always an adventure.

Forgive potential captain obvious, but at least on defending corners, a powerful goalie could do wonders if simply organizing us.

    Even a dominate CB.

Seems you need one or two dudes to be in READY mode.

This is the second time you guys have used a clip from my old youtube channel (Official Soccer 449), just wanted to say i’ve been visiting this website for at least 6 years and I really appreciate that I get to be part of it in a really small way (:

  9. Maminjo says:

Yea, Turina’s death was tragic because he had two twin girls and a pregnant wife.

He wasn’t good enough to make the National Team, but he was still a very good keeper in the Swedish league.

AIK fans tend to be pretty hardcore…which is odd, considering Sweden is pretty sterile otherwise.

  10. Crotown says:

I talked about Joe last week on this site- he played with such Croatian spirit- he played all heart- all the best big JOE

  11. Stipe says:

I remember we were playing like the shit in the fist half. I was nervous.

Serbia had most of the momentum until Srna played that beauty of thru ball to Mandzukic to score.

I don’t know what Srna was doing with that corner. What a horrible corner. HORRIBLE.

If I was Joe I would of at least confronted Srna in the locker room after the game. Joe did what he had to do. I love him for it.

  12. Maminjo says:

People forgot how shit Srna was in the few years prior to his final tournament (Euro 2016) where he played well.

It seemed as though he could not put in a cross higher than two feet off the ground. Terrible.

He was bad at World Cup 2014 and he was bad in Euro 2016 qualifying, but then he stepped up at Euro 2016. He retired at the right time though.

  13. Maminjo says:

… Vrsaljko was huge for us in 2018 World Cup qualifications, and the tournament itself.

I’m hoping he gets to full health for Euro 2021.

  14. Anonymous says:

I didn’t forget about shitty Srna or shitty Mandzukic, watching Mandzukic at the Euro ’16 was brutal, boy did that guy suck.
